How to manage mobile phones–
This is both i) a statement and ii) a question uttered by those that are (un)lucky enough to have this task thrust upon them! The statement usually starts with ‘I wish I knew …’ and the question with ‘does anyone know ….?’
Technology has advanced magnificently in recent years, with access to information and office applications becoming easier than ever for those on the move. What does not appear to have advanced with it is the ability to manage bills, mobile (technology) assets, VAT compliance for personal use (a risk if ignored), contracts and tariffs.
The typical scenario is that the bill mountains come in and they are paid, almost without question. New devices + contract are ordered as required (possibly through central purchasing) without knowledge of what is already available - left behind by leavers or simply no longer used. Tariffs are randomly agreed according to the provider’s recommendation, about once a year.
The effect of all this is that mobile phone/PDA fleets can cost vast sums of money and no one really wants to manage them because they are so fiddly. Needless to say, a large part of these vast sums is not always billed or allocated correctly, but there has been no alternative given the resource needed to trawl through every device.
